Improving the Healthcare Recall Process is a National Leaders Forum for transforming the recall process across the healthcare industry

PURPOSE: Mitretek Systems, a non-profit organization actively working in the healthcare product alert area, observed that the healthcare industry's major stakeholders in the product recall process have a fragmented view of how the process works from end-to-end and that there is no clear vision of the initiatives that should be undertaken to systematically improve the entire process.

HIGHLIGHTS: Representatives drawn from product manufacturers, distributors, and hospitals provided their perspectives on the data and information flow processes from the viewpoint of their segments of the healthcare industry. Food and Drug Administration representatives clarified their role in the process and presented their ideas on how the process could be improved. At the end of each formal presentation, there was be an open discussion/idea exchange between the audience and the presenters. View the speaker's presentations.

RESULTS: The forum resulted in three prominent themes:

• The need for industry-wide standardization of recall terminology
• The need to improve the "hand-off" of recall information between manufacturers, distributors, suppliers, and hospitals
• The need to continue the dialog opened at this Forum and to include more associations in future meetings and conversations
